AUDITORY SEQUENTIAL MEMORY INSTRUCTIONAL WORKBOOK
For the Development of Auditory Listening, Processing and Recall of Numbers, Letters and Words
by Addie Cusimano
This instructional workbook is an excelllent source for parents and educators to use to teach students how to expand their auditory sequential memory (listening skills) for numbers, letters and words. Proven to be highly effective, this teaching material helps develop a student's ability to attend, listen and recall series, thus improving such skills as the memorization of number facts, the sequential order of letters for spelling and writing, and the memorization of lists of words for social studies and science. Presented in a developmentally controlled fashion, it can be easily administered in 5-10 minute sessions. Included in the workbook is an easy to follow teaching manual, sixty-six (66) pages of exercises and a reproducible student record sheet.
It has been determined that within the area of the brain that controls the processing of information presented in isolation or sequential order, each aspect (numbers, letters and words ) is specific unto itself. Therefore, a student who has mastered the skill of number memory may not have developed the skill of remembering letters and words, or visa versa. For this reason, it is essential to consider the development of all three areas, numbers, letters and words separately.
Included in the instructional workbook is developmentally presented auditory memory instruction for:
Numbers
Single numbers from one to seven
Double and triple digit numbers
Letters:
Single letter letters from one to seven
Words:
One syllable words from one to six
Two syllable words from one to six
This Auditory Sequential Memory Instructional Workbook can be used with small groups or individually. It is a wonderful source for remediation as a follow up to the administration of the Test of Auditory Perceptual Skills (TAPS), a diagnostic test that is often administered by school psychologists. One workbook per instructor can be used with many students.
This workbook is a wonderful source for homeschooling parents, classroom teachers, reading specialists, special education teachers, speech therapists and special clinics that specialize in auditory sequential memory remediation. In addition, it is an excellent aid to help children with learning disabilities and/or attention deficit disorder ADD or AD/HD to improve their listening skills and, in particular, their ability to attend to series of letters, numbers and words.

There are any number of ways that improving ones ability to attend, listen and recall a series of numbers, letters or words will help the student. A few examples would be:
- Students who expand their digit span recall improve their recall of dates, numerical facts, and numerical patterns and formulas.
- With an increased sequential letter memory, students are able to retain a longer and longer series of letters, making it easier for them to write words as they are spelled to them and to recall the sequential order of letters of words for spelling. Students will also find work that requires copying easier.
- Word memory improves a students ability to attend, listen and recall lists of words. For example, in science and social studies, it will be easier for the student to recall the names of the five great lakes, the major countries in a continent or the various parts of a plant.
