ACHIEVE: A Visual Memory Program Levels V & VI
Two Volume Set
7th and 8th grade
FACTS:
•
Students reading below grade level are twice as likely to drop out
of school.
•
The majority of incoming ninth graders in high-poverty urban schools read two to three years below grade level.
•
Twenty-five percent of high school drop outs have been classified
as learning disabled, that is, students with an average to above
average IQ with serious learning skill deficiencies.
•
Learning disabled students are often very weak in the visual and
auditory memory skill areas.
In 2007, the USA Nation’s Report Card showed that 26 percent of all eighth graders were reading below the basic reading level. Most of these students are extremely weak in the learning skill areas as well as vocabulary, word meaning, spelling, and comprehension. Their structural analysis skills are, in many cases, weak, especially in terms of structural analysis. For that reason they struggle to sound out multi-syllable words. For instance, they may not know that ture sound like chur as in adventure or creature, or that ious sounds like e us as in curious or furious. In addition, many do not have a good solid sight vocabulary of 7th and 8th grade level words, which often is caused by weak visual memory of words. Also, since there generally is no formal teaching of reading in basic English literature classes in 7th and 8 th grade, these students end up struggling through the reading of literature assignments with very poor reading comprehension. Lastly, many seventh and eighth graders are very weak in the area of word meaning.
Achieve: A Visual Memory Program Levels V & VI is designed to teach visual memory along with the teaching of basic 7th and 8 th grade vocabulary. In addition, it lends itself well to the teaching of syllabication and the sounding out of multi-syllable words, thus increasing the middle school student’s knowledge and ability to sound out multi-syllable words. Each book of the two volume set teaches 200 cards, 100 basic words with word meanings for every word presented and 100 cards to be used for student application. It is developmental in its presentation of words and moves from a 13 letter letter span to a 16 letter span, teaching basic 7th and 8 th grade vocabulary, word meaning and word attack while teaching students how to apply their knowledge to these skills.
